Which are the costs and burden of diseases caused by exposure to Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals in the European Union? The European Union (EU) instructed a Steering Committee of scientists to assess, on the basis of current evidence, the economic, social and environmental implications of Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals’ (EDCs) regulation in Europe. The main findings of this work are summarized in the article. The group of experts reached a consensus regarding the causal link of EDG on the following conditions: IQ reduction and associated mental retardation, autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, obesity, cryptorchidism, male infertility, and mortality associated with testosterone reduction. These diseases, which represent only those related to EDCs with the highest probability of causation, have a financial cost of €157 billion / year, equal to approximately 1.23% of the GDP of the whole EU.
